The period (typically between the ages of 45 and 50) when a woman has had no menstrual periods for 12 consecutive months is called menopause, which is a word from the Greek language that actually combines month and terminate that literally translates to mean “the end of the monthlies.” This is a condition that usually affects a woman by the time she has reached the age of fifty-one, though it may present in some women in their thirties.

There are other factors that influence the onset of menopause and they include the age that a woman’s mother herself suffered from the condition, and even the environment plays a role in determining when symptoms and also signs of perimenopause will start to occur. Among the most usual symptoms of menopause are anxiety and even depression, endometriosis, fibroid tumors, thinking that is fuzzy and having lapses in memory, night sweats and hot flashes, not being able to handle stress, menstrual cycles that become irregular, tender or lumpy breasts and mood swings, to name a few.

When a woman is still healthy and is menstruating, her body will produce estrogen which is a main hormone that is produced within ten to twelve days immediately after her last menstrual flow.

There are also instances when women show early signs of menopause even when they are in their thirties and this may have come about because menstrual periods change and also when there are premenstrual symptoms that are of a severe nature. Premature menopause occurs when women stop menstruating before reaching the age of forty and such instances could be due to natural reasons, or because of genetics. Often, it can also come about due to taking treatment for some other medical condition of which removing ovaries because of cancer is a good example.
